CTA bus 9409 at Washington and Dearborn on August 4, 1985, heading west on Route 20 – Madison. Chicagoans “of a certain age” may recall Stop & Shop, which was sort of like a mini-Treasure Island type grocer in the space occupied by the Designer Mart in this photo. The entire block (Block 37) where these stores were located was declared “blighted” by the City and nearly all buildings were leveled in 1989. Block 37 remained undeveloped for more than a decade, and temporarily housed a skating rink in winter.
